Bursting at the Seams :: |
A visitor to the city today is likely to be struck by the
absence of modern public amenities. The streets are narrow
and congested and, during the monsoon, become waterlogged
after a heavy downpour. Transportation is slow moving both
because of the conditions of the roads and the continuous
spillover of the people from the pavement. Power cuts until
a few years ago were endemic and almost a way of life. The
infrastructure of the city has simply not kept pace with its
expanding population.
